Among the treasure’s given to me by our dad, Kendall Charles Whalen, is his 5th grade composition book. In it are all the usual English exercises taught back then: capitalization rules, some spelling and vocabulary words, the proper form for writing a letter, and, of course, the age-old “What I Did on My Vacation” composition.
Below is Dad’s 1923 Thanksgiving vacation essay. He was 10 years old when he wrote it, but if you knew KCW, you’ll note that some things never changed.
